Rajai Davis & The Blue Jays Walk-off Baltimore

The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-6 tonight with a walk-off base hit by Rajai Davis in the 9th inning.  The Blue Jays have now won their last 9 straight ballgames to get back to .500 with a record of 36-36.

R.A. Dickey started for the Blue Jays and went 6 innings, plus two batters in the 7th inning.  He gave up 6 runs, including a three run homerun by Chris Davis (6th inning), and solo homeruns from J.J. Hardy (2nd inning), and Ryan Flaherty (7th inning.)

The Blue Jays took an early 2-0 lead off an Adam Lind homerun (Edwin Encarnación was on 2nd base after a double.)  They then went up 3-1 in the 5th Inning when Munenori Kawasaki hit a single with Maicer Izturis on 3rd base.

After Davis’s three run homerun helped the Orioles take a 5-3 lead in the 6th inning, Encarnación hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead to 5-4.  Flaherty’s homerun put the Orioles ahead by 2 runs again, but Kawasaki hit his first major league homerun in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie the game up at 6 (it was a two run homerun with Izturis on base.)

Then came the 9th inning.  Casey Janssen, the Blue Jays’ closer came into the the game to pitch the top of the 9th.  He threw 9 pitches to get the 3 outs, and then the bats came out again for the Blue Jays.  Izturis singled to begin the bottom of the 9th.  Thole bunted to move Izturis to second.  Mark Derosa (pinch hitting for Emilio Bonifacio) and was intentionally walked.  Kawasaki hit a ball that looked like it was going to be a double play, but DeRosa jumped by the swipe by Flaherty and the Orioles only managed to get Kawasaki out, but Izturis moved to 3rd base, and DeRosa moved to 2nd.  Then Rajai Davis hit a single to left field to win the game.

The winning pitcher was Casey Janssen, the losing pitcher Brian Matusz.  Attendance was 35, 472.  The Blue Jays are getting closer to the East Division leaders the Boston Red Sox.  This season is certainly getting interesting.  While it is certain that the Blue Jays will lose at some point, let’s hope this is the beginning of good things to come for the Blue Jays.  Let’s GO BLUE JAYS!!!
